Obituary

Walter M. "Mike" Henry, Sr., 77 years, of Kempton, passed away Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Laurel Center Nursing Home in Hamburg, ending his battle with cancer.  He was the husband of Anna Jean G. "A.J." (Cameron) Henry for 56 years last August.  Born in West Hazleton, Mike was the son of the late Walter "Pete" and Betty (Lutz) Henry.  Mike was a faithful and loving husband with a great sense of humor.  Mike and AJ loved taking trips, visiting museums, touring wineries and strolling through historic towns.  He was a devoted father whose life lessons will continue to be instrumental in the lives of his children. Mike was happiest spending time with his beloved granddaughter Sarah Grace.  Whether he was playing with Sarah, taking her to the zoo, eating ice cream or swimming in the pool, "Pap" cherished his time with "Gracie".  Mike was especially happy when leading his "seasoned" motorcycle crew along the asphalt byways of the East coast.  He embraced life and the outdoors with enthusiasm.  Mike loved hunting and helped to create a hideaway cabin for family and friends to utilize for many years to come. He also spent many years fishing and boating in both fresh and salt water.  Mike was the "king" of organizing functions.  Whether for Rotary, the food bank, church, Pine Lakes of Lynn or family events, Mike knew how to plan an event for all to enjoy.  He truly loved interacting with people.  He was in his glory when he had a "new" crowd to tell his stories and jokes.  Mike's contribution to organizations and generosity knew no bounds.  He truly would give you his last dollar or the shirt off his back if he knew it would help you. In his youth, Mike was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America at Trinity Lutheran Church in West Hazleton. Upon graduation from high school, Mike served in the United States Marine Corps for seven years.  He continued to live the Semper Fi tradition and organized a celebration to commemorate the Marine Corps birthday every November. After serving in the military, Mike became the Operation Systems Manager for Bell Telephone of PA. His career with Bell spanned over 35 years.  Mike came out of retirement and was instrumental in the formation of Nexlink Communications.  After Nexlink, Mike worked as an office manager for his son's HVAC Company Parent & Kirkbride in Furlong, PA for several years.  Recently, he even found time to work for Phoebe Pharmacy delivering medications to local Nursing Homes.  Throughout his career, Mike was a Mason, a member of Allentown West Rotary, a member of the Patriot Guard and the Coast Guard Auxiliary.  He also was an active member of Ziegel's UCC Church and the Lowhill Food Bank.
